The calf you see in this photo was shot in the head inside a supermarket in Germany after he managed to escape from a truck that overturned on its way to the slaughterhouse.
The calf tried to find shelter in the supermarket, not knowing his dead body parts were designed to get there eventually. However, a living animal was not part of the plans and after the place was evacuated, he was executed on the spot. The police claimed the calf was “extremely dangerous”.
Another calf was also shot to death, the police didn’t say why. Overall, two innocent calves found themselves dead in this incident, trying to escape the brutal force of human kind.
Where Land Meets Sea, Lesvos Island, Jan 2016
Lesvos has become the unofficial ‘gate’ for refugees trying to cross into Fortress Europe over the past year. Lesvos is perhaps the largest 'island’ on the archipelago of exception along the migrant corridor, along which physical and social space are set under constant negotiation. The rugged, mountainous landscape of the north is perforated by synthetic piles of survival, ones that challenge its legitimacy over the land. Curved is also the social terrain, with displaced people, locals and volunteers renegotiating social space in the island.
